7 Landscaping Tips to Make Your Home More Valuable

Increase Your Home’s Value With Landscaping

Landscaping is important when selling a home, because landscaped homes sell for between 5.5% and 12.7% more than houses that aren’t landscaped. If you’re a little bit lost on where to start with your home’s landscape, follow these seven tips.

1. Purchase Plants in Bulk and When They’re On Sale

Landscaping your home doesn’t have to be a pricey endeavor. You can easily add value to your home without needing to hire a professional landscaper, and you can purchase plants while they’re on sale or in bulk. Purchasing flowers or shrubs in bulk gives you more bang for your buck with the simultaneous bonus of increasing the value of your home.

2. Use Drought Tolerant Plants

If you don’t have a particularly green thumb, invest in some drought tolerant plants like yarrow, pink grass, Russian sage, desert willow or red yucca. These low-maintenance plants will require little upkeep but are sure to beautify your home, making it more appealing to buyers.

3. Use Gravel as an Embellishment

Avoid using concrete as much as you can in your yard. Instead, use gravel to build pathways, as landscape edging and as landscape filling. This will make your yard look much more inviting than if it were overrun with concrete.

4. Add Outdoor Lighting

A little bit of lighting can go a long way. Decorative lights keep your home illuminated and give it the appearance of being a warm, inviting place.

5. Create Focal Points

Create nice focal points with bright flowers, pretty trees or decorative statues. Anything than stands out among the rest of your landscape can draw attention in a positive way. Make sure to not be too over-the-top, however. Your focal points should be subtle rather than dramatic.

6. Don’t Put Too Much Pressure on Yourself

Unless you have a particularly green thumb or are a professional landscaper, your home’s landscape won’t be perfect, and that’s okay. You don’t need to have an impeccably landscaped yard to increase the value of your home. Even the most basic landscaping can make your home much more appealing to buyers.

7. Use the Landscape to Highlight the Cool Architectural Features of Your Home

Every home has at least one unique and interesting architectural feature. Use your landscape to highlight and bring attention to this feature in your home. This will ensure buyers notice the feature and will likely increase their interest in the house.

Following these tips is sure to make landscaping your home, and reaping the benefits of your beautiful landscape, a breeze.
